National Museum

Kigali Art Museum:

Previously known as the Presidential Palace Museum, this new museum showcases contemporary artworks from both Rwanda and abroad. It aims to provide insight into the unique creativity of Rwandan artists. The museum explores the evolution of art from ancient times to the present, highlighting the fusion of traditional and modern imaginations. Additionally, the garden features the preserved debris from the presidential jet that crashed on April 6, 1994, maintaining its status as a heritage site.

Butare National Museum:

Rwanda’s Butare National Museum offers a glimpse into pre-colonial culture, featuring clothing, food, production, hunting, storage, music, money, and traditional ritual objects. These exhibits provide an idea of what daily life was like for the locals during that era.

Butare National Museum is divided into two sections: the Ethnographic Museum in Butare, which showcases all of Rwanda’s pre-colonial artifacts, and the King’s Palace in Nyanza, located off the route connecting Kigali and Butare.

Kigali Genocide memorial:
The Kigali Genocide Memorial features three permanent exhibitions. The largest of these documents the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Additionally, there is a children’s memorial and an exhibition on the history of genocidal violence worldwide. The site also includes an education center, gardens, and the Genocide Archive of Rwanda, all of which serve as a poignant tribute to those who perished and offer a profound educational experience for visitors.

Campaign against Genocide Museum:
The Campaign Against Genocide Museum, one of eight museums managed by the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, is located in Rwanda’s Parliamentary Building. Inaugurated in 2017 by Paul Kagame, the museum highlights Rwanda’s history during the campaign against the genocide of the Tutsi.

Kandt House Museum:

Kandt House Museum, one of the finest in Kigali, is managed by the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. Dedicated to Richard Kandt, the museum aims to showcase the evolution of life and the rich flora and fauna of Rwanda. It highlights the interplay between nature and history, embodying the essence of a natural museum. Visitors can also enjoy spectacular views of the three mountains and the historic old Kigali city.
