Akagera National Park

Named after a river that flows into the upper headwaters of the Nile, Akagera boasts a remarkable conservation success story. It is now home to lions and rhinos, making it Rwanda’s sole Big Five Park and the largest protected wetland in central Africa. Located just a two-hour drive from Kigali, Akagera offers a stunning savannah landscape that’s easy to access. The park’s diversity of habitats—lakes, marshes, savannah, mountains, and woodland—creates an exceptionally beautiful scenery. For bird enthusiasts, Akagera is a paradise with over 482 bird species documented, including rare finds like the prehistoric shoebill and Lake Victoria endemics. Tourism revenue supports park conservation and local community livelihood through revenue sharing.

Visitors can enjoy various activities:

  • Day Game Drives: Explore the picturesque landscapes of Akagera, encountering diverse wildlife such as zebras, elephants, and buffalos. Knowledgeable guides offer insights into animal behavior and conservation efforts.
  • Boat Trips: If you are looking for a variation on the typical safari, you should consider a boat trip on Lake Ihema, where you can cruise along the forest-fringed body of water amid hippos and crocodiles.
For serious birders, a boat trip is a must. You can book a private cruise or group rides.
Note: Outings take place four times a day—at 7.30am, 9am, 3pm and 4.30pm. Non scheduled, private trips can also be arranged.

  • Fishing: Lake Shakani is ideal for sport fishing. Spend a relaxing day by the lakeshore, then cook your catch over a campfire (bring your own equipment).
  • Night Drives: Cap off your day with a guided night drive, offering glimpses of nocturnal wildlife like lions and leopards.
  • Walk the Line: Join park fence attendants on their daily patrol along a portion of Akagera’s perimeter fence. This scenic walk offers spectacular views and insights into park management.
  • Community Cultural Experiences: Engage with local communities through cultural activities like milking cows or learning about traditional crafts such as banana beer and honey production.

Akagera National Park promises not just a wildlife adventure but also a rich cultural and ecological experience in the heart of Rwanda.
